Research Activity
Overarching goal of the Cell Physiology Lab is to understand the mechanisms by which signaling processes are coordinated in the cell and why this coordination fails in disease conditions. With historical focus on calcium signaling and calcium-regulated proteins, such as calcineurin, we use multidisciplinary approach and cutting-edge technologies to identify key signaling hubs and to investigate their physiological mechanisms in order to understand how their dysfunction drives disease pathogenesis. We identified ER-mitochondrial contacts as a principal hub, coordinating key cellular pathways and we are developing innovative molecular probes for detection and restoration of ER-mitochondrial communication in Alzheimer’s and other diseases
